Consider a gift to support students of Chinese language
For many SF State students, getting an education is a constant financial struggle. Financial need manifests itself in our classrooms every day: some students work full time to support their studies, while others are the primary support for their families. Though 64% of SF State students receive at least some financial aid, large gaps in coverage remain. Inspired by the urgent need, the SF State Chinese Flagship Program is now raising funds to support scholarships for students of Chinese. We ask for your help.
Our students are highly motivated to learn the Chinese language and experience Chinese culture, but often need support to help with day-to-day academic and living expenses. And let’s face it: Chinese is a difficult language, and mastering it takes discipline, focus, and much, much time. Worrying about making ends meet can be a great impediment to our students. Funding for study abroad opportunities is available, but support for students while they are here on campus is much harder to find. Thus our goal now is to establish a Chinese Scholarship Fund for domestic studies. Given the rich history of our program and the wealth of course offerings in Chinese, we want to ensure that all students who are motivated to undertake Chinese language studies are able to do so.
The needs of the global workforce are changing. Language and cultural skills are an asset in an increasingly competitive job market. With this in mind, students of Chinese often major in a field outside of the language with the goal of combining both skills. As teachers we strive every day to assist students to prepare for international careers. Scholarships can often be that little bit of extra financial help that makes their dreams possible. Scholarships also represent an affirmation, a vote of confidence that powerfully influences our ability to recruit and retain students all the way through to graduation.
We hope we can provide some relief for students as they work to study Chinese and pursue their passions. Please give generously. Thank you!
